Invisalign Questions in Cockeysville, MD
Learn more about Invisalign with answers to these popular questions:
Is Invisalign right for me?
Invisalign is a great option for patients who are in good oral health but want to treat mild to moderate orthodontic problems, including tooth gaps, crooked teeth, and misaligned bites. We do not recommend Invisalign for patients with restorations like implants or bridges. Additionally, patients who clench and grind their teeth as a result of TMD will not benefit from treatment because they will wear down the Invisalign aligners.
How long is the Invisalign treatment?
Every patient has different orthodontic needs, which means that their total treatment time will vary. Depending on the patient, Invisalign treatment can take 6 months to several years. We can anticipate some of the tooth movement that occurs during treatment. However, patient care can keep treatment on track.
Do you wear Invisalign aligners during sleep?
Yes, patients have to wear their aligners for about 22 hours a day, meaning they wear them during sleep. We do not recommend Invisalign for patients who clench and grind their teeth at night because they can damage their aligners.
Why do you need a retainer after Invisalign treatment?
Wearing a retainer after Invisalign helps keep teeth in place and prevents shifting. At first, we recommend that patients wear their retainers 12 to 22 hours a day. Over time, patients will solely wear their retainers at night. If patients stop wearing their retainers, their teeth can begin to shift.
Is Invisalign faster than braces?
Invisalign can be faster than treatment with braces because Invisalign patients typically have fewer complex orthodontic problems. Metal braces can treat multiple orthodontic issues, while Invisalign is best for patients with mild to moderate orthodontic problems.
How do I know if my Invisalign is tracking?
The Invisalign aligners should be tracking if the trays are in proper alignment and flush with the teeth. If there are gaps between the teeth and the aligners or if they feel loose, they are not tracking properly. Wearing aligners as long as possible, or 22 hours a day, can help get patients back on track. We also ask that patients let us know if they require attachments or backtracking.
