Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Having to visit the dentist can cause dental anxiety and may prevent some patients from receiving the oral health care they need. Fear of the dentist can be caused by an intense gag reflex, jaw pain, or feel fear from the sounds and smells associated with the dentist. Other patients feel dental anxiety because they have been away from the dentist for a long time and may feel self-conscious about the state of their teeth and gums.

Cockeysville, MD dental health care team at Valley Dental Health offers experienced sedation dentistry services to relax you and alleviate your fears during your dental implant procedure or periodontal treatment. Our team of dental care professionals fosters a welcoming, non-judgmental, and comfortable dentist office experience.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a way for patients to feel totally relaxed during their dental care treatment. Sedation dentistry comes with its own set of concerns and questions. This month we are discussing some common concerns patients have about sedation dentistry to offer some answers that may help you feel more at ease. Our dentists and dental care team are committed to making your visit with us as comfortable as possible.

What types of sedation do Dr. Rafat and Dr. Izadi offer?

Valley Dental Health offers 3 types of sedation dentistry.

  • Nitrous Oxide: Also known as laughing gas. This gas is administered to the patient immediately before treatment. The patient will remain alert and conscious while feeling completely relaxed. Nitrous oxide takes effect immediately and wears off right after your procedure so you can drive yourself home.
  • Oral Sedation: prescription medication is administered and ingested prior to your visit. You will feel relaxed and at ease while maintaining your consciousness. No needles necessary- and budget friendly. The patient will require a ride home after treatment.
  • IV Conscious Sedation: this is carefully controlled in the office setting and will settle you into a light sleep during your surgery so you won’t feel a thing. IV sedation dentistry must be administered by a trained and certified dentist. Valley Dental Health is one of the few dental offices in Hunt Valley to offer IV dental sedation. The patient will require a ride home after treatment.

Is sedation dentistry safe to use?

Sedation Dentistry is safe. Our dental care team’s top priority is your safety.  Our team of certified sedation dentists will monitor patients closely while they are under. IV sedation is quickly reversible if necessary, and each dosage is customized to your individual needs. Your Valley Dental Health dentist will discuss all sedation options with you prior to treatment. Dr. Izadi or Dr. Rafat will analyze your overall health and medical history before recommending IV Sedation for your dental procedure.

Are the dentists in Cockeysville qualified to administer sedation dentistry?

Yes. Valley Dental Health is one of the only dentist offices in Hunt Valley to offer all three types of sedation dentistry. Our dentists are certified in IV Sedation for the safety and care of our patients.
